WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? When he was shot, Trayvon Martin was not the baby-faced boy in the photo that has been on front pages across the country. And George Zimmerman wasn't the beefy-looking figure in the widely published mugshot.

Both photos are a few years old and no longer entirely accurate. Yet they may have helped shape initial public perceptions of the deadly shooting.

"When you have such a lopsided visual comparison, it just stands to reason that people would rush to judgment," said Kenny Irby, who teaches visual journalism at the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The most widely seen picture of Martin, released by his family, was evidently taken a few years ago and shows a smiling, round-cheeked youngster in a red T-shirt. But at his death, Martin was 17 years old, around 6 feet tall and, according to his family's attorney, about 140 pounds.

Zimmerman, 28, is best known from a 7-year-old booking photo of an apparently heavyset figure with an imposing stare, pierced ear and facial hair, the orange collar of his jail uniform visible. The picture, released by police following the deadly shooting, was taken after Zimmerman's 2005 arrest on an assault-on-an-officer charge that was eventually dropped.

In a police video made public this week of Zimmerman being brought in for questioning a half-hour after the shooting, the 5-foot-9 man appears much slimmer.

In a case that has caused a nationwide furor over race and the laws of self-defense, Martin was shot to death by Zimmerman in the city of Sanford on Feb. 26 as the unarmed black teenager was walking back from a convenience store.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer whose father is white and whose mother is Hispanic, has claimed self-defense, saying he opened fire after Martin punched him in the face, knocked him to the ground and began slamming his head on the sidewalk.

Black leaders and others are demanding Zimmerman's arrest on murder or manslaughter charges, but state and federal authorities are still investigating.

Betsi Grabe, a professor at Indiana University-Bloomington who has studied the effect of news images on public opinion, said photos that gain the most traction play into the desires of both journalists and the public for a story with a distinct victim and aggressor.

"At the center of most stories we tell in our society, cross-culturally and across the centuries, is the struggle between good and evil," she said. "If the ingredients are there, that is what journalists will grab onto and present."

Grabe said it is natural to present the most innocent-looking image of the person believed to be the victim, and the most menacing one of the suspect.

A more complex portrait of the two figures has emerged since then. A photo of a beaming Zimmerman looking sharp in a jacket and tie has come out, along with a more recent picture of Martin, with gold teeth and a white sleeveless undershirt. At the same time, it was learned that Martin had been suspended from school for marijuana residue in his backpack.

The Associated Press has not been able to verify the sources or creators of what are purported to be more recent photographs of Martin circulating online and elsewhere. The family's attorney has not released the photos.

"Everyone's views seem to be gyrating back and forth with each new scrap of evidence that comes out," said David O. Markus, a prominent Miami defense attorney. "This is why we have courts and juries, and why the process is slow. No one should rush to judgment."

Gordon Coonfield, a communications professor at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, said the early perceptions of Zimmerman as a vigilante may ultimately have no bearing on the case.

He cited the case of Rodney King, the black motorist beaten two decades ago by white Los Angeles police officers in an episode captured on video. The officers were acquitted in state court, though two were later found guilty on federal charges.

"I think the nation felt quite certain it saw the truth of what happened to Rodney King, and the DA tried the case as if the images spoke for themselves," Coonfield said. "Yet the state criminal court decided the images were not self-evidently true. The defense won by offering a more convincing explanation of the images, focusing on what could not be seen ? officers' motives, reasoning, and judgment."

From Zero to Four Kids in Thirty Seconds: a ... - Creative Organizing

If you?ve been reading my blog for a while, then you know that when I do book reviews they are typically on self improvement books, organizing books, or decorating books, as these are the kinds of books I most enjoy reading. On the rare occasion that I stray from my genre of choice, my next favorite type of book is humorous, non-fiction?a comedic recount of real life events?like Julie and Julia and Eat, Pray, Love. These two books, by the way, just so happen to be the only two non self-improvement and non-organizing books I?ve read since starting this blog. Well?until now.

?

I recently finished reading the book From Zero to Four Kids in Thirty Seconds, by Amy L. Peterson. This book is about ?Amy a 30-year-old woman who spent many years polishing an unapproachable outer shell and maintaining a long list of reasons why not to have children. She keeps a canoe on her front porch, a mountain bike in her kitchen and a balance in her checking account.

?

Mark is an older, divorced man with four kids. He sleeps on an Army cot and eats out of pots and pans given to him by his therapist. He has a Ph.D. in stream ecology, a VW Rabbit with 285,000 miles on it and enough fishing tackle to sink a small boat.

?

Amy falls for Mark hook, line and hundreds of dollars in sinkers.

?

This is Amy?s humorous yet compelling story of becoming a stepmother. The book?s catchy chapter titles and over 70 tips make this a must read for stepmothers and future stepmothers. From Zero to Four Kids in Thirty Seconds is a fun ride that will convince women that with the right guy, being a stepmother can be rewarding, fun and full of surprises. Amy wouldn?t have had it any other way.?

Like most of the other books I review on my blog, I was asked by the author?s ?people? to read the book. In this case, however, the author?s people just so happen to be my people, too. You see, Amy, the author, is my sister and this is her story?a comical recount of how her life turned upside down when she fell in love with Mark, a man with four kids.

I can?t begin to tell you how fun it was to read this book?it was like spending the afternoon with my sister, which is a rare treat for me (since we live over eight hours apart from one another). Her writing is real and personal, as are the stories she shares on the pages of the book. And like the other memoirs I mentioned above, this book made me literally laugh out loud on several occasions. (And I don?t think this was simply because I personally know the entire cast of characters in the book.) Amy is, and has been for as long as I can remember, a gifted writer with an incredible sense of humor. (One book reviewer on Amazon compared her to Erma Bombeck. How cool is that, right?)

Aside from being a fun love story, the book also has 70 useful and humorous tips for step moms.? Like this one:

Tip #34:? If your man is like most men, he doesn?t fumble very often, so enjoy yourself.

This tip is from the part of the book where Mark asks my Dad (who is also Amy?s Dad, in case you are skimming) for Amy?s hand in marriage. My Dad probably saw this coming?but he didn?t use that as any reason to take it easy on poor Mark.

?So---,? Mark started, as he reached for his tie like he wanted to loosen it.

?So--,? my dad repeated. He looked at me kind of funny. I shrugged and tried to wipe the grin off my face. My Dad cleared his throat and wiped his mouth. Mark wiped his mouth for the third time.

Finally, Mark said, ?So. Well. I?ve been trying to figure out something all during diner. How to ask you something.?

?Any particular kind of something?? my dad asked, sitting up straight now and looking cool and controlled.

?Well, as a matter of fact a pretty special something,? Mark said, and, then, in the same explosive breath added, ?Like asking for your daughter?s hand in marriage.?

My father said nothing as he coolly removed a comb from his back pocket, combed his mustache and said, ?Well, that is kind of a special something.? Then staring right at Mark he added, ?So, why don?t you go ahead and ask me??

?Dad!?

?

Mark?s face turned beet red as he reached for his tie and fumbled with the knot. After swallowing loudly, he finally sat back and sighed loudly before admitting, ?I wasn?t expecting that.? He laughed an odd little laugh. ?Okay.? He cleared his throat. ?Mister Peterson, would it be okay if I took your daughter?s hand in marriage??

?Well now,? my dad began, ?you really should take all of her, you know, not just her hand.?

?

?Lord,? I said.

?

My father broke into a smile and said, ?Of course you can marry my daughter. I trust her judgment completely and if she says you?re the guy, then I?m all for it.?

?

So Mark, now glowing with perspiration, turned to me and asked almost plaintively, ?Am I the guy??

?

I sat back, looked him up and down and with a critical eye and said, ?Well, now let me just think about this--.?

?

Throughout the book Amy shares that my Mom told her (over and over again) that she had no idea what she was getting herself into, marrying a man with four kids. And mom was certainly right. But from the sounds of the above, Mark didn?t really know what he was getting?into either by marrying a Peterson. None the less, it turned out great for everyone. My sister went from living alone, with no T.V. (and truly a bicycle in her kitchen) to living with five people who loved to watch T.V. She went from living in an apartment with an oven she never turned on, to baking birthday cakes for kiddos four times a year. (It was when she started baking that I knew Mark had caught her hook, line and sinker.)

?

Amy truly never wanted kids?or at least that?s what she thought. What I know for sure is this:? Amy is and always has been an amazing sister, daughter, and wife, and I think she is a pretty incredible step Mom, too. She approached becoming a step mom with a sense of knowing that she really didn?t know what she was getting herself into, and with a willingness to do her best as she figured it out. Most of all, she went into her role of step mom with one of her very greatest gifts?her sense of humor. And this is exactly what she shares on the pages of From Zero to Four Kids in Sixty Seconds.

Fiji takes control of national airline from Qantas

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Fiji's military government says it is taking control of the country's national carrier Air Pacific from Australian company Qantas.

The government of Commodore Frank Bainimarama has issued a decree saying that all Fijian-registered carriers must now be owned and controlled by Fijian nationals.

Fiji already owns a majority stake in the airline, holding 51 percent of it while Qantas owns 46.3 percent. But Fijian Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said Qantas since 1998 has exercised effective control over the carrier because Qantas-appointed board members enjoy supermajority and veto rights.

Qantas said it would issue a statement later Wednesday.

"It's an open secret that Qantas has proposed to sell their stake to the Fijian government," said Sayed-Khaiyum.

He said the two groups haven't been able to agree on a price and that Fiji is hoping Qantas will agree to a binding independent valuation of its stake. He added the decree has nothing to do with the potential sale.

However, the Fijian government's latest move could negatively impact the value of the stake to Qantas and to any interested third parties.

In a question-and-answer statement on the change, the Fijian government said it is "false and misleading" to think Fiji is nationalizing the airline and depriving Qantas of its shareholder rights.

Qantas will retain its ownership stake and its right to dividends, according to the Fijian government, but will no longer be able to exercise control over the annual operating budget, the appointment of the airline's chairman, the addition of new routes or a host of other management decisions.

Fiji claims Qantas has been directly competing with Air Pacific through Qantas's wholly owned subsidiary, Jetstar.

Air Pacific is responsible for carrying more than 70 percent of visitors to Fiji, the government said, making it a vital part of the tourism industry, which accounts for one-third of the Pacific island nation's economy.

Sayed-Khaiyum said Fiji has recently extended its diplomatic relations with a number of countries and would like to have the ability to fly to new places.

"We want to be able to expand beyond our region," he said.

In its last financial year, Air Pacific Group, which also owns a stake in a Fijian resort, reported an after-tax profit of 25 million Fijian dollars ($14 million) on revenues of 587 million Fijian dollars ($328 million).

Bainimarama has promised to oversee a process to introduce a new constitution to Fiji and to hold democratic elections in 2014.

In this series, Life's Little Mysteries provides expert answers to challenging questions.

Imagine if all 350 million toilets in the United States were flushed at the same time. Granted, doing this would require exceptional coordination, and the helping hands of a few million foreigners. But what if we could pull it off? Would flushing in concert explode all the pipelines, cripple the water supply, flood the streets with sewage and, in short, destroy civilization as we know it?

Turns out it's a complex thought experiment, and, without the possibility of a real-world test, experts can't be sure how things would, quite literally, go down. But a total system failure doesn't seem likely.

According to Michael Johnson, a civil engineer at the Utah Water Research Laboratory who models fluid flow in sewer systems, the consequences of mass flushing would range from negligible to pipe explosions depending on where you are. "Because each city has its own water supply system, the effects of the flush would be localized," he said.

In some towns, the biggest issue would be a shortage of water for refilling all the local commodes at once. Because of the incredibly low probability of a universal bathroom break, not all water towers and tanks keep the requisite 1.6 gallons in store for every toilet they supply, but instead are continuously refilled by pumps. In such places, simultaneous flushes would leave some toilets high and dry, and waiting around for a refill ? and this could cause serious plumbing problems by introducing air into the supply lines.

"Air in a pressurized water system is very dangerous as it can move very quickly through the supply lines and consequently result in serious water hammer," Johnson told Life's Little Mysteries.

Water hammers are pressure surges caused by a sudden drop in the velocity of water through a pipeline, and they can cause rigid pipes to explode. Emptying out a pipe, even just for a moment, introduces compressed air inside it, and when water later flows into the pipe and encounters this air pocket, the water comes to sudden a halt. The ensuing pressure surge can cause a pipe explosion.

Most cities could handle the flicks of all those handles without the risk of a water hammer.

"I would think that most cities have water supply systems that are robust enough to handle the refilling of all toilets simultaneously," said Ed Maurer, a civil engineer at Santa Clara University and a hydraulics expert. "For example, if one tank served 25 percent of my city (25,000 people) and even if we assume everyone had their own toilet to flush, the standard 1.6 gal/flush toilet would create a total need for 40,000 gallons, which is equivalent to a small pool." As for the outgoing sewage, we'd probably be saved from a plumbing disaster by a technicality: Simultaneous flushes don't seem simultaneous from the perspective of the main sewer line. "A simultaneous flush would result in sewage arriving at a main trunk line from toilets further from the branch connection arriving much later than sewage nearer the branch to trunk connection," Johnson said. In other words, rather than a peak, the main would receive a smooth curve of commode contributions.

However, it's possible that the plumbing in some apartment buildings might get backed up when all residents flush at once, depending on the building's pipe layout. It's also possible that two underground collection branches might meet simultaneously at a main line in some instances, causing a backup.

"If there are bottlenecks in the system, perhaps they could be overwhelmed, but I would not expect worse than we already see periodically," Maurer said. In some older East Coast cities, he explained, storm and sanitary sewers converge during heavy rain storms, causing sewage to get dumped into rivers and bays with the overflow. "That regularly causes public health issues already. Would a massive simultaneous flush produce more flow than an intense rainstorm? No."

Aside from minor mishaps here and there, neither expert actually predicts a major system collapse from collaborative flushing. That said, the American Society of Civil Engineers regularly grades the U.S. infrastructure, and as a nation we earn a grade of D.

"Our sewers, water systems and other crucial infrastructure is severely underfunded," Maurer said, "so maybe there will come a time when a massive toilet flush will have a bigger impact!"
