As more details of Tim Cook?s meet with Chinese officials in Beijing last week continue to filter out, Brightwire reports that the company may be planning to open a new research and development (R&D) plant in the region.
?At a meeting with Beijing?s acting mayor Wang Anshun on January 8, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company plans to set up an R&D center in Beijing,? the report reads. The information arrives courtesy of an (unnamed) ?insider source? who is reportedly said to have leaked the details to Tencent Tech, yesterday.
Perhaps even more interestingly, though, the report specifically notes that Cook is also said to have hinted that Apple will ?move a certain amount of its servers? which operate the back-end of its iTunes Stores (and App Stores), to China, in order to ?improve downloading speeds? for users across Asia who wish to take advantage of these services going forward.
According to the report, Apple is now expected to build its new research and development data center in Zhangjiakou, (which is located in the Hebei Province of the country), or alternatively, may instead opt for a build site located nearer to Inner Mongolia.
Speculation that Apple could be planning to build a new R&D facility in Asia, follows a separate report from TechCrunch that surfaced at the end October, which highlighted that Apple?s reported spend on ?Research and Development? had increased by a factor of $1 Billion to land at $3.4 Billion for the whole of fiscal year 2012.
The source of the original report, Tencent, is considered to be a rather major web portal for users across Asia ? However, such plans for the building of an R&D facility in the immediate region are yet to be officially confirmed by Apple.
