The first soldier to survive after losing all four limbs in the Iraq war has received a double-arm transplant.

Brendan Marrocco had the operation on Dec. 18 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, his father said Monday. The 26-year-old Marrocco, who is from New York City, was injured by a roadside bomb in 2009.

He also received bone marrow from the same dead donor who supplied his new arms. That novel approach is aimed at helping his body accept the new limbs with minimal medication to prevent rejection.

The military is sponsoring operations like these to help wounded troops. About 300 have lost arms or hands in the wars.

"He was the first quad amputee to survive" from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and there have been four others since then, said Brendan Marrocco's father, Alex Marrocco. "He was really excited to get new arms."

The Marroccos want to thank the donor's family for "making a selfless decision ... making a difference in Brendan's life," the father said.

Surgeons plan to discuss the transplant at a news conference with the patient on Tuesday.

The 13-hour operation was led by Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, plastic surgery chief at Johns Hopkins, and is the seventh double-hand or double-arm transplant done in the United States. Lee led three of those earlier operations when he previously worked at the University of Pittsburgh, including the only above-elbow transplant that had been done at the time, in 2010.

Marrocco's "was the most complicated one" so far, Lee said in an interview Monday. It will take more than a year to know how fully Marrocco will be able to use the new arms, Lee said.

"The maximum speed is an inch a month for nerve regeneration," he explained. "We're easily looking at a couple years" until the full extent of recovery is known.

While at Pittsburgh, Lee pioneered the novel immune suppression approach used for Marrocco. The surgeon led hand transplant operations on five patients, giving them marrow from their donors in addition to the new limbs. All five recipients have done well and four have been able to take just one anti-rejection drug instead of combination treatments most transplant patients receive.

Minimizing anti-rejection drugs is important because they have side effects and raise the risk of cancer over the long term. Those risks have limited the willingness of surgeons and patients to do more hand, arm and even face transplants. Unlike a life-saving heart or liver transplant, limb transplants are aimed at improving quality of life, not extending it.

Quality of life is a key concern for people missing arms and hands ? prosthetics for those limbs are not as advanced as those for feet and legs.

Lee has received funding for his work from AFIRM, the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine, a cooperative research network of top hospitals and universities around the country that the government formed about five years ago. With government money, he and several other plastic surgeons around the country are preparing to do more face transplants, possibly using the new minimal immune suppression approach.

Marrocco expects to spend three to four months at Hopkins, then return to a military hospital to continue physical therapy, his father said. Before the operation, he had been living with his older brother in a handicapped-accessible home on New York's Staten Island built with the help of several charities.

The home was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy last fall.

Despite being in a lot of pain for some time after the operation, Marrocco showed a sense of humor, his father said. He had a hoarse voice from a tube in his throat during the long surgery, decided that he sounded like Al Pacino, and started doing movie lines.

"He was making the nurses laugh," Alex Marrocco said.

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The Pacific air was so cold at the end of a 10-hour day at Torrey Pines that Tiger Woods thrust both hands in the front pockets of his rain pants as he walked off the course at the Farmers Insurance Open.

It was a fitting image. Woods made a marathon day look like he was out for a stroll.

Staked to a two-shot lead going into the third round of this fog-delayed tournament, Woods drove the ball where he was aiming and was hardly ever out of position. Even with a bogey on the final hole ? the easiest on the back nine ? Woods still had a 3-under 69 and expanded his lead by two shots.

In the seven holes he played in the fourth round later Sunday afternoon, Woods hit the ball all over the course and still made three birdies to add two more strokes to his lead.

Thanks to the fog that wiped out an entire day of golf on Saturday, the Farmers Insurance Open didn't stand a chance of finishing on Sunday.

Woods just made it look like it was over.

He had a six-shot lead with 11 holes to play going into the conclusion of the final round on Monday. The two guys chasing him were Brandt Snedeker, the defending champion, and Nick Watney, who won at Torrey Pines in 2008. Neither was waving a white flag. Both understood how much the odds were stacked against them.

"I've got a guy at the top of the leaderboard that doesn't like giving up leads," Snedeker said. "So I have to go catch him."

"All we can do tomorrow is go out and try to make him think about it a little bit and see what happens," Watney said.

And then there was Erik Compton, a two-time heart transplant recipient who had a birdie-eagle finish in the third round that put him in third place through 54 holes, still five shots behind Woods. Someone asked Compton about trying to chase Woods. He laughed.

"I'm trying to chase myself," he said.

Woods was at 17-under par for the tournament, and more than just a six-shot lead was in his corner.

He finished the third round at 14-under 202, making it the 16th time on the PGA Tour that he had at least a four-shot lead going into the final round. His record on the PGA Tour with the outright lead after 54 holes is 38-2, the exceptions being Ed Fiori in 1996 when Woods was a 20-year-old rookie and Y.E. Yang in the 2009 PGA Championship.

Woods attributed his big lead to the "whole package."

"I've driven the ball well, I've hit my irons well, and I've chipped and putted well," he said. "Well, I've hit good putts. They all haven't gone in."

Woods has a good history of Monday finishes, starting with Torrey Pines. It was on this course along the coast north of La Jolla that Woods won a 19-hole playoff against Rocco Mediate to capture the 2008 U.S. Open for his 14th major.

He also won the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on a Monday in 2000 when he rallied from seven shots behind with seven holes to play. He won his lone title in The Players Championship on a Monday, along with a five-shot win in the Memorial in 2000, and a scheduled Monday finish in the Deutsche Bank Championship outside Boston.

Woods even gets to sleep in.

A Monday finish because of weather typically resumes in the morning so players can get to the next tournament. CBS Sports, however, decided it wanted to televise the conclusion, and so play won't begin until 2 p.m. EST. That decision might have been based on Woods being headed toward victory ? just a hunch.

Woods already has won seven times at Torrey Pines, including the U.S. Open. That matches his PGA Tour record at Bay Hill and Firestone (Sam Snead won the Greensboro Open eight times, four each on a different course).

The tournament isn't over, and Woods doesn't see it that way.

"I've got to continue with executing my game plan. That's the idea," he said. "I've got 11 holes to play, and I've got to play them well."

He seized control with his 69 in the third round that gave him a four-shot lead, and he might have put this away in the two hours he played before darkness stopped play.

He badly missed the first fairway to the left, but had a gap through the Torrey pines to the green and had a two-putt par. He missed his next shot so far to the left that the ball wound up in the first cut of the adjacent sixth fairway. He still managed a simple up-and-down for par.

After a 10-foot birdie on the par-3 third, Woods couldn't afford to go left off the tee again because of the PGA Tour's largest water hazard ? the Pacific Ocean. So he went miles right, beyond a cart path, a tree blocking his way to the green. He hit a cut shot that came up safely short of the green, and then chipped in from 40 feet for birdie.

"I was able to play those holes in 2-under par," Woods said. "And then I hit three great drives right in a row."

One of them wasn't that great ? it was in the right rough, the ball so buried that from 214 yards that Woods hit a 5-wood. It scooted down the fairway and onto the green, setting up a two-putt birdie the stretched his lead to six shots. And after another good drive, the horn sounded to stop play. Because it was due to weather, Woods was able to finish the hole, and he two-putted for par.

Eleven holes on Monday were all that were keeping him from his 75th career win on the PGA Tour, and delivering a message to the rest of golf that there could be more of this to follow no matter what the golf course.

French urgency, U.S. caution collide in Mali operation

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - France's military intervention in Mali has revived trans-Atlantic tensions over security issues, this time involving a key counterterrorism battlefield, along with dismay from critics who see U.S. President Barack Obama as too reluctant to use military force.

According to interviews with officials from both sides, the French have privately complained about what they see as paltry and belated American military support for their troop deployment, aimed at stopping the advance of militants allied with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

The Americans question whether French President Francois Hollande's armed intervention, which is entering its third week, was coupled with a thought-through exit strategy.

Hollande called Obama on Thursday, January 10, and in a brief conversation about Mali, told the U.S. leader that France was about to mount a major military operation in the north African country.

Hollande was in a hurry and called Obama to inform, not to consult, according to French and U.S. officials. France's ambassador to Mali had sent an urgent message to Paris, warning that if the strategic city of Mopti fell to armed Islamic militants, there would be nothing to stop them from capturing the capital, Bamako, and controlling the entire country.

France launched its military operation on January 11.

"Had we not intervened, the whole region would have become a new 'Sahelistan'," said a senior French official, referring to the Sahel region of Africa south of the Sahara Desert.

But France's sense of urgency ran headlong into American concerns about whether Paris had a long-term plan for Mali, and about getting the U.S. military deeply involved in a new foreign conflict as Obama begins his second term in office, the officials said.

'MINIMAL' U.S. SUPPORT?

The United States has given what U.S. officials say is significant intelligence support to French forces in Mali, and has helped to airlift French troops and equipment into the country.

France wants more U.S. and European help to move its soldiers and materiel. More urgently, it wants U.S. aerial refueling capability for its planes, French officials said. That would help France conduct airstrikes to relieve pressure on French troops should they encounter trouble in northern Mali, they said.

A U.S. official said France's refueling request is under active consideration.

U.S. support has been "minimal" in practice, one U.S. official acknowledged on condition of anonymity. Washington, this official said, gave France a "hard time" when they asked for increased support, and the French will "remember us for that."

Obama, who took office when the United States was mired in two costly wars, has shown himself to be cautious - too cautious, mostly Republican critics say - about foreign military interventions. He limited the U.S. role in the campaign that helped oust Libya's Muammar Gaddafi and has resisted months of pressure for more muscular support for rebels fighting to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

There are disagreements within the White House and Congress about U.S. support for the Mali mission, said Republican Representative Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

"This is not new ... We're seeing an ongoing debate about our participation level in Syria. We saw that same level of debate about our participation in Libya, and now we're having that exact same philosophical stalemate and debate on what we do with the French in Mali," Rogers said in an interview.

Obama and his aides "don't want their hand forced by French action," said Todd Moss, vice president of the Center for Global Development think tank and a former top official in the State Department's Africa bureau.

"There is very little, if any, political support in the U.S. for military action in a place like Mali," Moss said.

Obama spoke to Hollande by phone on Friday and "expressed his support for France's leadership of the international community's efforts to deny terrorists a safe haven in Mali," the White House said in a statement.

The White House said Hollande thanked Obama for the "significant support" provided by the United States.

LOOKING FOR AN EXIT STRATEGY

France has 2,500 soldiers in Mali, which it sent to block a southward advance on the Malian capital by Islamists occupying Mali's north. While French and Malian troops have appeared to make progress in recent days, the Islamists have proven to be better trained and equipped than France anticipated.

The U.N. Security Council last month authorized deployment of a 3,300-member African military force, known as AFISMA, to Mali. The full force was originally not expected to be ready until at least September. It now appears that the Africans will be contributing many more troops with a sharply accelerated deployment schedule, although there are questions about how well trained and equipped they are.

Even before Hollande acted, the United States had been reluctant for months about supporting international intervention in Mali, causing French-U.S. frictions at the United Nations.

Remembering that it took the Americans weeks to decide on their level of support for the aerial mission over Libya in 2011, France decided to act immediately when Islamist forces in Mali began moving south, the French officials said.

One French official described Obama's policy as almost "isolationist" - very reluctant to intervene, especially without a clear, easily sellable U.S. strategic interest at stake.

The Obama administration has said it will do whatever it can to ensure France is successful in disrupting the militants' progress.

Tommy Vietor, a White House spokesman, said, "We continue to share the French goal of denying terrorists a safe haven in the region, and we support the French operation."

The United States, Vietor noted, is working to accelerate the deployment, training and equipping of the African force.

Privately, U.S. officials are more skeptical, suggesting that Paris has developed its plans on the fly, and has no clear exit strategy.

"I don't think it's a secret that the French military effort has evolved and developed over time, and as that's happened we've worked with them to get the clearest-possible picture of not just their short term planning but also how they view this operation looking in three months or three years," an Obama administration official said.

France has not specified how long its troops will stay in Mali, where they hope to split local Tuareg rebels away from AQIM militants and into talks with the Malian government.

"The longer we stay, the bigger the risks," the senior French official said.

Lomography Horizon Kompakt

The Lomography Horizon Kompakt ($299 direct) is likely to be lumped into the category of toy cameras due to Lomo's brand identity, but its 28mm f/8 fixed lens is capable of producing some seriously sharp images?a departure from the low-fi optics found in the Sprocket Rocket and Diana F+. The Russian-made camera is the less expensive of two models available, the other being the Horizon Perfekt?which is priced at a steeper $450. The Kompakt is an easier sell if you're interested in shooting with a panoramic camera, want something that's going to deliver sharp images, but aren't quite ready to make the plunge to buy the Perfekt or an even more expensive model like a Widelux or Hasselblad XPan.

The aspect ratio of the images is roughly 5:2, nearly twice as wide as a standard 35mm film frame. Because of this, you'll get fewer pictures per roll?about 22 for a 36-exposure roll and 14 with a 24-exposure roll. If you intend to scan film for sharing on the web you'll likely be limited to using a flatbed, as the film holders that are supplied with dedicated 35mm film scanners generally have posts at every standard frame break, a design that is intended to help keep film flat for sharper scans.

The camera has a large optical viewfinder that will give you an idea of your approximate frame. When taking a picture the lens actually swings from one side to another?the film plane is curved behind it to match the swing pattern, not flat as it is in other cameras. Loading the camera can be a bit tricky, as you need to make sure film is under certain rollers and over others?but the manual does a good job of explaining it, and there's a diagram printed on the inside of the camera in case you're questioning your skills when reloading in the field. Everything is done mechanically so there are no batteries required. Despite being billed as the Kompakt, it's a large, odd-looking beast?it's actually about the same size as a typical D-SLR body, although not as deep. ?

There are only two shutter speed settings?the daytime setting gives you a 1/60-second exposure, while the night setting is a half-second?as the lens has to physically move to take the shot, the actual exposure time is more like 1/12 of a second for the day mode and 5 seconds for the night. I was able to get sharp handheld shots without a problem with the shorter shutter speed?I just made sure to steady myself and choose mostly stationary subjects. If you want to get creative with the camera, Lomo's site has a few examples of folks taking shots where most subjects are static, but one is moving?which can create an interesting visual effect.

The night mode can be a bit more challenging, I got one shot that I liked using that setting without a tripod, but there is some evidence of camera shake in part of the frame. I didn't use a light meter with the camera, but I was able to get good exposures even with the limited shutter speed options thanks to the wide exposure latitude of 400 speed color negative film. If you feel that you're going to want more control out of a panoramic camera, you should consider laying out the extra money for the Perfekt?its lens has a variable aperture from f/2.8 to f/16 and there are several shutter speeds available, varying from 1/2-second to 1/500-second.

I was impressed with just how much detail the Horizon Kompakt was capable of capturing. I shot a variety of images ranging from rural landscapes to some street scenes in New York City. When I held the camera perfectly straight horizon lines were also quite straight?impressive for such a wide field of view?but tilting it a bit will cause straight lines to curve.

The Lomography Horizon Kompakt is a fun camera. Its swing lens design produces panoramic photos, and its 28mm f/8 lens is quite sharp. Sure, a lot of modern digital cameras?and even smartphones like the iPhone 5?have a panoramic photo mode, but for folks of a certain mindset there's no substitute for good old fashioned film. If the asking price is too much you can step down to the Sprocket Rocket, although the images it produces are nowhere near as sharp. And if you're really serious about shooting wide you may want to consider spending the extra money on the Perfekt, but for daylight use with negative film I didn't feel too restricted by the Kompakt's fixed aperture or limited shutter speed selection.

PFT: Saints fire defensive coordinator Spagnuolo

Steve SpagnuoloAP

Sean Payton is back as the Saints? head coach, and his first act is to fire his defensive coordinator and reshape his defense.

The Saints have announced that Payton fired defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and secondary coach Ken Flajole, and that Payton wants to shift to a 3-4 defense.

?I personally want to thank Steve and Ken for their contributions during what was an unprecedented 2012 season,? Payton said in a statement released by the team. ?Philosophically we are changing our defense to a 3-4 alignment and right now is the best time to accomplish this transition.?

Spagnuolo replaced Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator a year ago, after Williams left for St. Louis ? and before the news broke that the Saints had previously run a bounty program that would result in Payton being suspended for 2012 and Williams being banned indefinitely. Now Payton is back and Spagnuolo is out.

Old Technology Modernizes a Camera Sensor - NYTimes.com

Fuji has reached back into film history to tweak a digital light sensor technology that appears in the new $600 Fuji X20 consumer camera.

A camera?s light sensors are made of an array of tinier photo sensors usually set to detect red, green or blue light. Those smaller sensors are most often laid out in an orderly grid pattern called a Bayer array.

That causes a problem. When the orderly array of sensors takes a picture of some equally orderly patterns, say, a houndstooth jacket, or close parallel lines, an irregular wavy shadow or rainbow seems to appear over the image. That is called a moir? pattern.

There are a lot of ways to avoid the moir? pattern, but they degrade picture quality, often by making it a little fuzzy. In digital cameras, that is often accomplished with an optical low pass filter, a translucent filter which restricts light.

Old fashioned analog photographs didn?t get a moire pattern because the crystals in film and photo paper aren?t even in size and placement. That randomness breaks up the moire effect.

So Fuji built a new sensor employing what it knew from the film business. Instead of using the Bayer array, it created a pattern called the X-Trans sensor which lays out the red green and blue photo sensors in a way that simulates the randomness of analog film.

That allows Fuji to remove the low pass filter, which ? according to Fuji ? means higher resolution and less graininess than on photos taken with the the X10, the cameras new X20 replaces.

The X-Trans array sensor had appeared on last year?s X-Pro 1, which lists for $1,400 for the body alone. It is also on this year?s X100S, which lists for $1,300, although in both cases.

There is a trade off though. Photo editing products like Photoshop are made to work on shots taken using Bayer arrays. So you either must shoot JPEG images (not RAW) or add a step to processing, using Fuji software to translate your RAW image for use in Photoshop, Lightroom, or the like.

The X20 does claim other virtues. For one, Fuji says it has the fastest auto focus in its class (we are talking winner by tenths of a second here). Another feature should appeal to people who don?t like digging through menus for camera functions. The user of an X20 accesses a lot of features through knobs and dials mounted on the X20?s rangefinder-style body rather than using screen menus.

Men's Vitamins and DHEA: Building Muscle like a 20-year Old ...

benefits of mens vitamins with dhea 1

DHEA is a steroid. Military Grade?s Multipurpose Formula and Super Army & Professional Sports Formula contain DHEA. Should you be concerned? Is it Safe? Does it hold up to non-??doping standards?

Say the word ?steroid? and most people are ready to run the other way, suspect you of illegal activity, or harass you for tricking the sports training system. However, when we?re talking about DHEA, or Dehdroepiandrosterone as it?s formally known, we?re talking about a different kind of steroid.

DHEA is a steroid hormone and can be found in dietary supplements that are taken primarily by men, elite athletes, and people involved in extreme conditioning such as military, law enforcement, special ops personnel such as Navy Seals, and even high level corporate executives who operate under high levels of stress.

However, DHEA is not an anabolic steroid.

Anabolic steroids are the ?bad? ones. An anabolic steroid is defined as ?any of a group of usually synthetic hormones that increase constructive metabolism and are sometimes abused by athletes in training to increase temporarily the size of their muscles.? These types of steroids usually have a host of negative side effects including:

  • Heart troubles
  • Blood clotting
  • Liver conditions like jaundice
  • Reduced fertility
  • Anger issues

DHEA, which is often found in the best dietary supplements and men?s vitamins, is an adrenal steroid. It is an indirect building block for other hormones. It doesn?t directly affect the amount of testosterone produced.? It serves more as a buffer against excesses or deficits of estrogen and androgens.

What?s the Benefit of DHEA in Men?s Vitamins?

benefits of mens vitamins with dheaDHEA has been the subject of several anti-??aging studies. The whole ?anti-??aging? conversation is not about the number of candles you put on your birthday cake. It?s more about nutritionally supporting your body so that the health of all your body?s systems, including cells, hormones, organs, tissues and more, function at peak levels. And most people naturally peak in their younger years.

So the question has been asked, ?How can we turn back, or slow down, that biological clock??

It?s been well documented that the levels of DHEA in your system peak at around the age of 20?24 and then steadily decline. In fact, when a man reaches the age of 70, his DHEA levels could be as little as 10?20% the volume of what was present during his peak.

So how would you like to feel like you did when you were in your mid 20?s? How would you like your muscle tissue to respond to your workouts like they did during puberty?

That?s the goal that men?s vitamins strive for when they include a dose of DHEA.

The evidence supports a correlation between low DHEA levels and increased mortality in men, loss of lean body mass and muscle function. So adding DHEA to your men?s vitamin formula, allowing your body to have increased levels of DHEA, could bring some benefits, right?

DHEA has a positive effect on your hormones. As you age, your hormones adjust. It?s possible that a men?s vitamin that includes the right ingredients to balance out these adjustments could improve your overall conditioning efforts, mood, and even sex drive.

Like I said?want to perform like you did in your 20?s and 30?s?

But are Men?s Vitamins with DHEA Safe?

mens vitamins with DHEAThere were some concerns with DHEA early on. Some believed that there was a reason that DHEA levels decreased as you aged. The theory was that lower DHEA levels actually kept certain cancers from forming, such as prostate and breast cancer. While studies continue to gather data for long term use of DHEA as a supplement, there are no indications that maintaining those higher DHEA levels as you age is a threat.

Some studies have shown that DHEA caused a slight decline in HDL cholesterol (the good kind). Police trick entire school full of students into ... - Natural News

(NaturalNews) In a tactic that is not likely to inspire future cooperation or confidence in police, officers in Northampton, Mass., have tricked every student in the local high school into providing them with handwriting samples as part of an investigation.

In what is becoming increasingly common among local, state and especially federal law enforcement, every student in school was presumed guilty until proven innocent after officers in charge of investigating a threatening note convinced school officials to require every student to sign a statement.

Officers said they will then compare the handwriting of the signatures with the handwriting on the threatening note, which was found by school officials Dec. 19, a few days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, and led to the emptying of the school (not so ironically, students were asked to sign a statement "to take threats seriously," according to The Republican newspaper).

'We did nothing wrong'

What's more, no one in authority sees any problem with it.

Here are the details:

Two days after the threatening note was discovered, the paper reported that "students at the high school were asked to write a statement in reference to the threat acknowledging that they take such matter (sp) seriously and share the concern of police and school administrators about safety." Officials have described the statement as "a joint effort by police, the high school administration and the Northwestern District Attorney's Office," the paper said.

Upon getting the statements, police say they'll use them as part of their investigation, "perhaps matching the handwriting with that of one of the students," the paper reported (as if police and school officials really got the samples for some other reason).

As expected, Police Chief Russell P. Sienkiewicz said District Attorney David E. Sullivan defended their tactic as legal. Per The Republican:

Sienkiewicz has said that police take such threats seriously and noted the crime is punishable under state law by a minimum of three years in jail. He added ... that it is also part of his department's community care mission to identify and help troubled individuals.

"We disagree that it violates student rights," he said.

As authoritarians and statists always do, the official went on to justify his violation of the students' privacy rights with the excuse that he did it for their own "safety."

"We take any threats against children seriously and investigate all such threats," he said. "The alleged threat at Northampton High School was of a serious nature."

So, if an incident is "serious" enough, it warrants violation of students' rights and, by extension, those of their parents, is what this police official is saying.

Violation of our rights for our own good

What are missing from this story are details as to whether or not even writing a "threatening note" was even illegal or against school rules in the first place. It's understandable that school officials, police and a few parents would be jittery after an incident as horrific as Sandy Hook, but given the sensitivity of what had just happened, what would have been wrong with police and school officials explaining what they were doing, in the interest of full disclosure, and asking for the students' help?

Wouldn't that inspire more confidence in authorities and instill a much greater sense of community and cooperation?

We think so, and apparently some people in Northampton agree.

"Hey LIBS this is your logic coming full circle. I love it. Not even close to legal, but it's ok, its Northampton. Big Brother votes for libs," wrote one newspaper reader.

"What's funny about this case is that when you enter NOHO HS, they have glaring signs telling you that you are under video surveillance," wrote another. "Of course, when they started to pitch the idea that all students should lose all privacy rights by installing video cameras, they probably argued that video surveillance would make the school 'safer.' Um, gee, where's the expensive videotapes of who went in and out of that bathroom that day? You know, the video that would make us 'safer?'"

Most reasonable adults want their children protected, but when authorities get comfortable violating basic constitutional principles "for our own good," where will they draw the line?

LA church leaders shielded molesters, records show

Damian Dovarganes / AP

The entrance to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, headquarters for Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, is seen Jan. 21.

By Gillian Flaccus, The Associated Press

Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony and other top Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles officials maneuvered behind the scenes to shield molester priests, provide damage control for the church and keep parishioners in the dark, according to church personnel files.

The confidential records filed in a lawsuit against the archdiocese disclose how the church handled abuse allegations for decades and also reveal dissent from a top Mahony aide who criticized his superiors for covering up allegations of abuse rather than protecting children.

Notes inked by Mahony demonstrate he was disturbed about abuse and sent problem priests for treatment, but there also were lengthy delays or oversights in some cases. Mahony received psychological reports on some priests that mentioned the possibility of many other victims, for example, but there is no indication that he or other church leaders investigated further.

"This is all intolerable and unacceptable to me," Mahony wrote in 1991 on a file of the Rev. Lynn Caffoe, a priest suspected of locking boys in his room, videotaping their crotches and running up a $100 phone sex bill while with a boy. Caffoe was sent for therapy and removed from ministry, but Mahony didn't move to defrock him until 2004, a decade after the archdiocese lost track of him.

"He is a fugitive from justice," Mahony wrote to the Vatican's Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who is now Pope Benedict XVI. "A check of the Social Security index discloses no report of his demise, so presumably he is alive somewhere."

Caffoe died in 2009, six years after a newspaper reporter found him working at a homeless mission two blocks from a Salinas elementary school.

Mahony was out of town but issued a statement Monday apologizing for his mistakes and saying he had been "naive" about the lasting impacts of abuse. He has since met with 90 abuse victims privately and keeps an index card with each victim's name in his private chapel, where he prays for them daily, he said. The card also includes the name of the molesting priest "lest I forget that real priests created this appalling harm."

"It remains my daily and fervent prayer that God's grace will flood the heart and soul of each victim, and that their life journey continues forward with ever greater healing," Mahony wrote. "I am sorry."

The apology stands in contrast to letters Mahony was writing to accused priests more than two decades ago.

In 1987, he wrote to the Rev. Michael Wempe ? who would ultimately admit to abusing 13 boys ? while the priest was undergoing in-patient therapy at a New Mexico treatment center.

"Each of you there at Jemez Springs is very much in my prayers and I call you to mind each day during my celebration of the Eucharist," Mahony wrote to the priest, adding that he supported him in the experience.

The church's sex abuse policy was evolving and Mahony inherited some of the worst cases from his predecessor when he took over in 1985, J. Michael Hennigan, an archdiocese attorney, said in a separate series of emails. Priests were sent out of state for psychological treatment because they revealed more when their therapists were not required to report child abuse to law enforcement, as they were in California, he said.

At the time, clergy were not mandated sex abuse reporters and the church let the victims' families decide whether to contact police, he added.

In at least one case, a priest victimized the children of illegal immigrants and threatened to have them deported if they told, the files show.

The files are attached to a motion seeking punitive damages in a case involving a Mexican priest sent to Los Angeles in 1987 after he was brutally beaten in his parish south of Mexico City.

When parents complained the Rev. Nicholas Aguilar Rivera molested in LA, church officials told the priest but waited two days to call police ? allowing him to flee to Mexico, court papers allege. At least 26 children told police they were abused during his 10 months in Los Angeles. The now-defrocked priest is believed to be in Mexico and remains a fugitive.

The personnel files of 13 other clerics were attached to the motion to show a cover-up pattern, said attorney Anthony De Marco, who represents the 35-year-old plaintiff. In one instance, a memo to Mahony discusses sending a cleric to a therapist who also is an attorney so any incriminating evidence is protected from authorities by lawyer-client privilege. In another instance, archdiocese officials paid a secret salary to a priest exiled to the Philippines after he and six other clerics were accused of having sex with a teen and impregnating her.

The exhibits offer a glimpse at some 30,000 pages to be made public as part of a record-setting $660 million settlement. The archdiocese agreed to give the files to more than 500 victims of priest abuse in 2007, but a lawyer for about 30 of the priests fought to keep records sealed. A judge recently ordered the church to release them without blacking out the names of church higher-ups after The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times intervened.

They echo similar releases from other dioceses nationwide that have shown how church leaders for decades shuffled problem priests from parish to parish, covered up reports of abuse and didn't contact law enforcement. Top church officials in Missouri and Pennsylvania were criminally convicted last year for their roles in covering up abuse, more than a decade after the clergy sex abuse scandal began to unfold in Boston.

Mahony, who retired in 2011 after 26 years at the helm of the 4.3-million person archdiocese, has been particularly hounded by the case of the Rev. Michael Baker, who was sentenced to prison in 2007 for molestation ? two decades after the priest confessed his abuse to Mahony.

Mahony noted the "extremely grave and serious situation" when he sent Baker for psychological treatment after the priest told him in 1986 that he had molested two brothers over seven years.

Baker returned to ministry the next year with a doctor's recommendation that he be defrocked immediately if he spent any time with minors. Despite several documented instances of being alone with boys, the priest wasn't removed from ministry until 2000. Around the same time, the church learned he was conducting baptisms without permission.

Church officials discussed announcing Baker's abuse in churches where he had worked, but Mahony rejected the idea.

"We could open up another firestorm ? and it takes us years to recover from those," Mahony wrote in an Oct. 6, 2000, memo. "Is there no alternative to public announcements at all the Masses in 15 parishes??? Wow ? that really scares the daylights out of me!!"

The aide, Msgr. Richard Loomis, noted his dismay over the matter when he retired in 2001 as vicar for clergy, the top church official who handled priestly discipline. In a memo to his successor, Loomis said Baker's attorney disclosed the priest had at least 10 other victims.

"We've stepped back 20 years and are being driven by the need to cover-up and to keep the presbyteriate & public happily ignorant rather than the need to protect children," Loomis wrote.

"The only other option is to sit and wait until another victim comes forward. Then someone else will end up owning the archdiocese of Los Angeles. The liability issues involved aside, I think that course of complete (in)action would be immoral and unethical."

Mahony preferred targeted warnings at schools and youth groups rather than a warning read at Masses, Hennigan said. Parish announcements were made two years later.

Baker, who was paroled in 2011, is alleged to have molested 20 children in his 26-year career. He could not be reached for comment.

The files also show Mahony corresponded with abusive priests while they underwent treatment out of state and worked to keep them out of California to avoid criminal and civil trouble.

One case involved the Msgr. Peter Garcia, a molester whom Mahony's predecessor sent for treatment in New Mexico. Mahony kept Garcia there after a lawyer warned in 1986 that the archdiocese could face "severe civil liability" if he returned and reoffended. Garcia had admitted raping an 11-year-old boy and later told a psychologist he molested 15 to 17 young boys.

"If Monsignor Garcia were to reappear here within the archdiocese, we might very well have some type of legal action filed in both the criminal and civil sectors," Mahony wrote to the director of Garcia's New Mexico treatment program.

Mahony then sent Garcia to another treatment center, but Garcia returned to LA in 1988 after being removed from ministry. He then contacted a victim's mother and asked to spend time with her younger son, according to a letter in the file.

Mahony moved to defrock him in 1989, and Garcia died a decade later.

Value of Pet Poop, And Picking It Up | Steve Dale's Pet World

Value of Pet Poop, And Picking It Up

Your dog or cats poop is a kind of Google on your pet's health. Pay attention it. I've been saying this for quite some time, even spoke about the etiquette of picking up after your pup on The Oprah Winfrey Show a number of years ago. That's one reason why Dr. Donna Solomon's blog about feces struck a cord. She mentions how everyone in the studio blushed when Dr. Mehmet Oz talked poop on an Oprah show.

There are many details about poop.

Picking up isn't only is the?neighborly?thing to do - it's for the best interest of all pets in the community.?It's true there are some potential health issues to people, according to veterinary?parisitologist Dr. Dwight Bowman of the?Companion Animal Parasite Council?and Cornell University College of?Veterinary Medicine including roundworm, salmonella andcamplobacteriosis. Giardia, roundworm and whipworm can be spread to
other dogs, even the parvovirus to those not vaccinated

Also, as one now retired Chicago Alderman famously said "Dog poop is like caviar for rats." That's not exactly true in that rats don't relish dog poop - but like most things, they will cheerily eat the poo if they're hungry enough.

And at this time of year, complaints skyrocket across the nation. I don't know why, but people believe the stuff is going to somehow disintegrate if there's snow. Or in the winter, maybe people are just too cold to bend over and pick up.

And leaving it out, may mean another dog will scarf up the poo. A community service? Well, not quite. Dogs that eat other dog's "stuff" have a condition known as coprophagia.

When you do pick up, I am a fan of biodegradable poop bags (of course, I am.).

Also, as Solomon so well describes in her blog, "The Scoop on Your Pet's Poop," what comes out the other end offers great insight into your pet's overall health. Hope you're not eating as you read this - but it's true, color, consistency, shape/size,?frequency?and location all matter.

And as Solomon says - and I agree, next time your pet poos, don't look away....instead, pay attention and then either pick it up outside or scoop the cat box inside. And get a clothespin.

Foody blast!: My favourite food and drink in 2012

I'm not a huge fan of retrospectives or of summing up an event/time period past, but I do love a list. And I didn't blog a lot last year so I owed you (the Blasters) an update.

So here's my favourite food and drink related experiences from 2012 - restaurants, recipes and new finds.

1. Polpo

Ok, so I truly discovered the Polpo way in 2011. My trip to Venice wouldn't have been anywhere near as good without Russell Norman's guide to the bars and eateries that inspired him to open Polpo. But in 2012 a new branch appeared in Smithfield, a stone's throw from where I work. A colleague and I went for opening day and enjoyed far more half-price food than we should have done! Polpo has been my go-to restaurant on so many occasions this last year - pre-theatre, lunch with friends, no-fuss dinners. I'm a huge fan - I've even got the recipe book and the badge (no, really, I've got a badge!).

2. Ginger shandy in Tobago

The food is, on the whole, good in Tobago. It's plentiful, flavoursome and fuss-free. But my outstanding flavour memory from my time there is ginger shandy - ice cold bottles of the local lager (Carib) flavoured with ginger. It goes perfectly with fish, spicy chicken, sun and Caribbean views. PS: if anyone knows where I can buy it in England, please let me know.

3. Creamy lentils

I've never really eaten lentils much before, certainly never cooked with them. But in 2012 I spotted a recpie for creamy lentils that looked worth a try, and it has become a bit of an obsession since. It's incredibly easy: fry an onion or shallot in a little oil, add some puy lentils and stir them around a bit, add stock, put a lid on it and let it simmer until the lentils are cooked (or for as long as the packet says). At the last minute, stir in a spoonful of creme fraiche and some?herbs. It makes a great dinner paired with sausages, salmon fillets, chicken breasts ... There may be many others but they haven't been discovered (a prize for anyone who identifies the last quotation there).

4. Meze in Istanbul

It's common to find pretty bad food in big, touristy cities. But if you know where to look, there's amazing food too. Istanbul is particularly good at 'knowing what's expected of it' - hence lots of trad-modern mezze places, particularly hidden away in the Beyoglu district. We particularly enjoyed Antiochia for divine meze with a good selection of wine. I seem to remember the puddings weren't great, but who cares when you could have more delicious bread and houmus instead?

5. Cocktail tasting in Edinburgh

Ah, Edinburgh. How you seduce me. The perfect blend of traditional old-world and modern, bustling city with eating and drinking places to match. On both visits we've stopped off in the bar of The Balmoral hotel, one of the most iconic and well-known buildings in the city (right by Waverley station). Their cocktail tasting menu is a ridiculously wonderful idea - a whole five-course menu of cocktails, for around ?30. So you can begin with an amuse bouche of rhubarb liqueur with elderflower, then move onto an elegant and clever martini for the main course. It's a great way to spend the evening.

And the best of the rest ...

6. Aperol spritz

Another Venice legacy - buy a bottle of Aperol and follow the instructions on the back to make the perfect spritz. Enjoy it in your garden with some almonds and a book.

7. Skylon

The huge restaurant in the Southbank Centre? is a great place to eat before a show at the Royal Festival Hall. The food is good, service impeccable, window seats pretty peaceful and the prices lower than you'd expect.

8. Bishopsgate Kitchen

A cute little place just over the road from Liverpool Street station, Bishopsgate Kitchen?is great when your train has been delayed and you just want some homely, simple food. Have the sea bass?with lentils!

9. Polish wedding

If you ever get invited to a wedding in Poland, remember to pack your appetite. We'd read the funny anecdotes before we went, but we still weren't prepared for the mountain of food we were expected to eat. My highlight: at about midnight a waiter offered me a huge bowl of stroganoff. As if the mountains of canapes, two-course meal, buffet and generous slice of wedding cake wouldn't see me through.

10. Heston?from Waitrose

I'm no longer a Heston sceptic. This range is amazing, particularly the Ras-el-Hanout nut mix and the salted caramel popcorn. And remember the spiced pastry mince pies for next Christmas!

Somali official: AU troops killed 7 civilians

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? African Union troops mistakenly opened fire on a religious school while pursuing militants, killing five children and two adults, a Somali legislator said Thursday.

Dahir Amin Jesow, who visited the scene of the attack at Leggo village, said all five children were less than 10 years old.

Jesow said the attack in the village 75 miles (120 kilometers) west of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, took place around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Students of Islamic schools in Somalia often attend class in the early morning.

The AU soldiers were earlier attacked by militants, Jesow said.

The Somali government condemned the killings. "We have zero patience for the killing of innocent civilians," Abdikarim Hussein Guled, Somalia's interior minister said in a statement issued after a cabinet meeting.

"We demand a clarification from the AMISOM on that attack," he said.

The African Union Mission for Somalia, known as AMISOM, said it is investigating the incident.

"AMISOM is mindful of its responsibility to minimize civilian casualties during its operations and we have clear rules of engagement to that effect. We are therefore currently establishing the facts and the circumstances around this tragic incident so as to ascertain whether, and to what extent, these rules may have been breached," said Acting Force Commander Maj. General Salvatore Harushimana in a statement Wednesday evening

AU troops are in Somalia to bolster the country's weak government, which is facing an insurgency from al-Qaida-linked militants.

(AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't think there's a parallel between film and real-world gun violence.

The 65-year-old former governor of California returns to the big screen Friday as the sheriff of an Arizona border town tasked with stopping a Mexican cartel boss from returning to Mexico. It marks his first leading role since serving as The Governator for six years.

"I personally feel that this is entertainment," said Schwarzenegger. "The other thing is a serious real life tragedy. I think that we are going to continue doing entertainment. That is what we are doing as our profession, but at the same time, we all have a responsibility, I think, to improve the situation that we are in."

Schwarzenegger noted it's important not to stigmatize mental illnesses. He also cited parenting, education, security and gun laws as contributing factors to the issue of gun violence.

"We as a society have the responsibility to look at this and leave no stone unturned," he said.

Despite returning to moviemaking with "The Last Stand" and last year's "The Expendables 2," Schwarzenegger still wants to keep a toe in the political pool. He launched a think tank last year at the University of Southern California, the Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy. He hopes to work on reforming immigration, energy and environmental policies.

"Those things needs to be addressed ? and even the budget deficit," said Schwarzenegger. "How do you stop spending $1.3 trillion more than we are taking in? What do we do about it? All of those things I think were a failure, so our institute will address all those issues and study it. I will be involved with that, but I am not sitting in Sacramento. I am, in the meantime, sitting in Hollywood and continuing in the movie business."

Schwarzenegger said his smaller part in "Expendables 2" prepared him for his starring role in "Last Stand," which also features Johnny Knoxville. He'll next be seen alongside Sylvester Stallone in "The Tomb" set for release later this year.

"I feel I have a bigger range, acting-wise," said Schwarzenegger. "It could be because of the age. It could be because of my experience that I have had now as governor."
