Study: Other diseases cause death in men with prostate cancer

BOSTON, Mass. -- Men diagnosed with prostate cancer are more likely to die from other diseases.

Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health studied the cases of death among more than half a million men in the United States and Sweden.

They found many men had prostate cancer when they died, but the disease was the cause of death in, at most, 30 percent of cases.

Men were more likely to die from diseases like heart disease, leading experts to say patients can lower their risk for premature death by dieting and following a healthy diet.

One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.

This study was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
