Scientists deepen genetic understanding of MS

Five scientists, including two from Simon Fraser University, have discovered that 30 per cent of our likelihood of developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can be explained by 475,806 genetic variants in our genome. Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) commonly screen these variants, looking for genetic links to diseases.

Corey Watson, a recent SFU doctoral graduate in biology, his thesis supervisor SFU biologist Felix Breden and three scientists in the United Kingdom have just had their findings published online in Scientific Reports. It's a sub-publication of the journal Nature.

An inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults. Canada has one of the highest MS rates in the world.

Watson and his colleagues recently helped quantify MS genetic susceptibility by taking a closer look at GWAS-identified variants in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region in 1,854 MS patients. The region has long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MS patients' variants were compared to those of 5,164 controls, people without MS.

They noted that eight percent of our 30-per-cent genetic susceptibility to MS is linked to small DNA variations on chromosome 6, which have also long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MHC encodes proteins that facilitate communication between certain cells in the immune system. Outside of the MHC, a good majority of genetic susceptibility can't be nailed down because current studies don't allow for all variants in our genome to be captured.

"Much of the liability is unaccounted for because current research methods don't enable us to fully interrogate our genome in the context of risk for MS or other diseases," says Watson.

The researchers believe that one place to look for additional genetic causes of MS may be in genes that have variants that are rare in the population. "The importance of rare gene variants in MS has been illustrated in two recent studies," notes Watson, now a postdoctoral researcher at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

"But these variants, too, are generally poorly represented by genetic markers captured in GWAS, like the one our study was based on."

Can Controversial Ocean Iron Fertilization Save Salmon?

What's been described as a "rogue" geoengineering experiment is really an effort, however flawed, to restore salmon abundance

In a bid to restore lost fish abundance, the Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. (HSRC) undertook to mimic the effects of a volcanic eruption by fertilizing the ocean with iron. The idea was to provide the missing nutrient for a plankton bloom that would then trickle up the food web and restore salmon?with the ancillary effects of gathering data on the ocean food web and, potentially, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

"What if this is a means by which ocean pastures can be stewarded and brought back to health?" asks Russ George, chief scientist of the expedition as well as a controversial businessman with a history of attempting to start CO2-removal schemes ranging from reforestation to ocean fertilization. "This is a tiny village of people trying to take care of their backyard."

Old Masset village on the Haida Gwaii Islands off the British Columbia coast did this by contracting George and others to initiate the largest such intentional ocean fertilization effort to date. It authorized the release of roughly 110 metric tons of iron dust, 91 metric tons of the iron sulfate fertilizer commonly used as a lawn treatment and employed in other scientific experiments, and nearly 20 metric tons of the iron oxide found in soils around the world. "It's micronutrient enrichment," Jason McNamee, operations officer and corporate director for the HSRC, told a press conference on October 19. "We took a bag of iron, and we slapped it over one square kilometer [of ocean]."

To do that, this past July the HSRC team motored more than 300 kilometers west from the Haida Gwaii Islands to an ocean eddy in the fishing vessel Ocean Pearl. The area had previously been scouted by collecting water samples since January and lies outside Canadian territorial waters. The team also used more than 20 autonomous oceangoing robots, including two bright yellow gliders and 20 Argo drifter robots on loan from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to survey the scene?work that is ongoing. Over the course of several days the researchers then released the 110 metric tons into the fishing boat's wake in an attempt to raise the levels of iron in the water from one or two parts per trillion up to five to 10, although both concentrations are estimates.

Satellite images as well as maps of chlorophyll abundance appear to show that the iron did indeed fuel a plankton bloom in August. But questions remain: Was it the right kind of bloom to bury carbon? Will it have any effect on the salmon?

Ocean restoration
The HSRC's basic idea is born out of marine biology as well as observations of the aftermath of volcanic eruptions in the region. For example, a lack of iron limits the growth of microscopic plants in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica and elsewhere, a fact that prompted marine biologist John Martin to famously muse: "Give me half a tanker of iron, and I'll give you the next ice age."

In the summer of 2008 Mount Kasatoshi in Alaska's Aleutian Islands blew, sending volcanic minerals, including iron dust, far to sea and prompting plankton blooms across the Gulf of Alaska. At the same time, years and years of decline in returning salmon populations led researchers to expect few of the fry from 2008 to return in later years, only to find a record salmon run in Canada's Fraser River in 2010.

German gaming giant Bigpoint lets go 120 employees

German online gaming giant Bigpoint is letting go about 120 employees, with founder and CEO Heiko Hubertz also set to stand down from the top role.

The 120 job cuts, as reported late last night by Games Industry International, Financial Times Deutschland and others, are apparently due to worse than expected performance for the company.

Bigpoint will no longer be carrying out games development in the US:??The games that we have developed in the last two years haven?t been that successful, and the San Francisco area and Bay Area is quite a competitive market,? About 40 employees in San Francisco will be let go as well as about 80 administrative staff in Hamburg, in a bid to reduce costs ? ?about 15 per cent of the company?s workforce, according to Financial Times Deutschland.

'Skyfall' Makes World Premiere in London

LONDON -- Daniel Craig and a glittering array of stars including Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Ben Whishaw and director Sam Mendes stepped out for the world premiere of Skyfall, the latest in the James Bond franchise, in London on Tuesday.

The royal gala, which benefitted charities to help members of the security services, attracted huge crowds hoping to catch a glimpse of the cast. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker-Bowles?also attended the event at the Royal Albert Hall.

Normally one of London's classical music concert destination venues and home to the BBC Proms, the circular-shaped building had been converted to a giant cinema for the evening. The top brass from MGM, Sony and Eon Productions all gathered for the screening, with Royal protocol keeping everything in check.

Prince Charles requested the event's proceeds go to support charities that help members of the three intelligence agencies -- the Secret Intelligence Service, better known as MI6, the Security Service, commonly known as MI5, and the GCHQ signals intelligence agency.

REVIEW: 'Skyfall'

Producer Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson walked the carpet along with writers Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. Craig is used to his Bond outings, receiving Prince Charles' seal of approval with both Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale enjoying royal gala status.

After a military brass band played out some of the Bond themes from the past fifty years of the franchise, including You Only Live Twice and Goldfinger, the audience inside was treated to a showreel of clips from all previous 22 outings with actor's Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan getting the biggest cheers from auditorium before Craig made his appearance.

At that point, the noise rose visibly inside the hall. Then the arrival of the Royal party and the meet-and-greet outside the converted concert hall was beamed in.

Sony Corp. CEO and president Kazuo Hirai and former chief and board member Howard Stringer were among the first to get the Royal handshake before a string of the movie's production team, ending with director Mendes.

Mendes was followed by his actors including Whishaw, Berenice Marlohe, Fiennes, Naomi Harris, Bardem, Dench and finally Craig, with wife Rachel Weisz standing politely behind him.

Wilson and Broccoli took to the stage ahead of the movie saying that since 1964 and the film Goldfinger, the Bond movie premieres had been Royal galas to raise money for charities.

Wilson, to applause, told the audience the evening had raised more than ?300,000 from the sale of tickets and programs for Prince Charles' nominated charity.

Mendes was then brought to the stage by the producers and he thanked everyone for coming declaring it an honor and privilege "and something of a relief" to be standing on stage just ahead of the film's debut.

He noted the two main reasons for "the 50 years of Bond are standing next to me," referencing Broccoli and Wilson.

Mendes then introduced his cast declaring that, as everyone knew, "a director is only as good as his cast."

The biggest cheer from the enthusiastic crowd was again reserved for Craig although the applause for Dench ran the Bond actor close.

"Everyone owns Bond and tonight he belongs to all of you," Mendes said before saying he hoped the crowd enjoyed it and thanking them again.

The Mendes-helmed Skyfall marks Craig's third turn as Bond in the franchise's 23rd installment. He's signed on for the next two films as the British secret agent; MGM and Sony will continue to co-finance and distribute.

The movie "yanks Bond, M and MI6 out of the world of colorful megalomaniacal villains and into the vexing world of shadowy terrorists and cyber warfare,"?THR?chief film critic Todd McCarthy?wrote in his review.

Skyfall will be rolled out by Sony Pictures across British cinemas on Oct. 26 and into most U.S. theaters Nov. 9. The latest installment is due to land in Imax theaters across North America on Nov. 8.

How Higher Ed Can Master Student Recruitment on Social Media ...

While college alumni love their school?s game day Facebook photos and posts about events and traditions, prospective enrollees want more informative social media content that will help them to decide which higher ed institution is right for them, how to enroll, and how to excel while completing their degree.

According to the 2012 Social Admissions Report, approximately two-thirds of high school students now use social media to research colleges and enrollment. The report, which polled 7,000 students in August 2012, was conducted by Zinch, an online scholarship and school-matching service run by Chegg, and Inigral, a tech company that focuses on student engagement online.

The poll revealed that 72% of rising high school seniors have already researched prospective colleges on a social media site, and that 71% have done that research using their mobile device. Facebook remains the top way to reach potential students with 88% using Facebook and 53% accessing the social media site multiple times a day. YouTube and Twitter follow second and third with other popular social media venues trailing distantly.

Discontent with Prospective Student Content
While the percentage of prospective students using social media to make college comparisons is growing, only 40% of those who visited a college or university?s social media presence found the information useful or relevant. Said students polled in the survey:

?I would like to see an advice column or an FAQ section where common ?worry? questions can be answered to help ease the tension upon arriving to college or while attending college.?

?I really like when I came across tips about enrollment and what not to do.?

?I would like to be able to ask a question and really have a response to it, and not just an administrator telling me to look at the blah blah tab on their website.?

Gil Rogers, director of College Outreach for Zinch, told Inside Higher Ed that universities should look at the results from the student survey and perhaps reconsider their social media strategy to focus more on information and engagement for prospective students. In a Noel-Levitz 2012 E-Expectations Report, students researching higher ed institutions ranked the content they valued most in the following order:

1. Academics

2. Cost/Financial Aid

3. Admissions Process

4. Campus Visit

5. Campus Life

6. Athletics

In addition, respondents noted that the following content was what they expected to find after liking a college?s Facebook page:

• Information about admission deadlines and events (36%)
• Information about academic programs (34%)
• Updates through the news feed (30%)
• Special information unavailable elsewhere (26%)
• Interaction with page administrators (26%)
• Contact from school about admission (26%)
• Photos and videos (25%)
• Interaction with other people who like the page (21%)
• Specific information tailored to the user?s profile (18%)

Can your body sense future events without any external clue?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Wouldn't it be amazing if our bodies prepared us for future events that could be very important to us, even if there's no clue about what those events will be?

Presentiment without any external clues may, in fact, exist, according to new Northwestern University research that analyzes the results of 26 studies published between 1978 and 2010.

Researchers already know that our subconscious minds sometimes know more than our conscious minds. Physiological measures of subconscious arousal, for instance, tend to show up before conscious awareness that a deck of cards is stacked against us.

"What hasn't been clear is whether humans have the ability to predict future important events even without any clues as to what might happen," said Julia Mossbridge, lead author of the study and research associate in the Visual Perception, Cognition and Neuroscience Laboratory at Northwestern.

A person playing a video game at work while wearing headphones, for example, can't hear when his or her boss is coming around the corner.

"But our analysis suggests that if you were tuned into your body, you might be able to detect these anticipatory changes between two and 10 seconds beforehand and close your video game," Mossbridge said. "You might even have a chance to open that spreadsheet you were supposed to be working on. And if you were lucky, you could do all this before your boss entered the room."

This phenomenon is sometimes called "presentiment," as in "sensing the future," but Mossbridge said she and other researchers are not sure whether people are really sensing the future.

"I like to call the phenomenon 'anomalous anticipatory activity,'" she said. "The phenomenon is anomalous, some scientists argue, because we can't explain it using present-day understanding about how biology works; though explanations related to recent quantum biological findings could potentially make sense. It's anticipatory because it seems to predict future physiological changes in response to an important event without any known clues, and it's an activity because it consists of changes in the cardiopulmonary, skin and nervous systems."

The study, "Predictive Physiological Anticipation Preceding Seemingly Unpredictable Stimuli: A Meta-Analysis," is in the current edition of Frontiers in Perception Science. In addition to Mossbridge, co-authors of the study include Patrizio Tressoldi of the Universit? di Padova, Padova, Italy, and Jessica Utts of the University of California, Irvine.

Ill-chosen words can haunt incautious supervisors. Example: Using the term ?slacker? to describe someone who misses lots of work. Here?s why: Disparaging comments may be proof that the employer retaliated against an employee for taking too much leave.

Recent case: Craig was a Lee County EMT. He took considerable FMLA leave for himself and to care for his parents. The county routinely approved his FMLA leave requests.

Then, after six months, he was terminated for arriving late to an emergency call. He sued, alleging retaliation.

As evidence, he introduced testimony from his union representative. The rep recalled that he told several employees that management had Craig on its ?radar? for taking too much time off.

The rep also testified that supervisors referred to employees with absenteeism problems as ?slackers.?

Craig also pointed out that another EMT who was also late for a call was merely suspended. She hadn?t used FMLA leave?and in her case, the patient actually died, perhaps because of the delay.

That was enough for the court to let Craig?s case proceed. A jury will now decide whether he was really punished for being a late or for taking too much FMLA leave. (Cotora v. Lee County, No. 2:10-CV-775, MD FL, 2012)

Psst, taxes go up in 2013 for 163 million workers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama isn't talking about it and neither is Mitt Romney. But come January, 163 million workers can expect to feel the pinch of a big tax increase regardless of who wins the election.

A temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes is due to expire at the end of the year and hardly anyone in Washington is pushing to extend it. Neither Obama nor Romney has proposed an extension, and it probably wouldn't get through Congress anyway, with lawmakers in both parties down on the idea.

Even Republicans who have sworn off tax increases have little appetite to prevent one that will cost a typical worker about $1,000 a year, and two-earner family with six-figure incomes as much as $4,500.

Why are so many politicians sour on continuing the payroll tax break?

Republicans question whether reducing the tax two years ago has done much to stimulate the sluggish economy. Politicians from both parties say they are concerned that it threatens the independent revenue stream that funds Social Security.

They are backed by powerful advocates for seniors, including AARP, who adamantly oppose any extension.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

The question of renewing the payroll tax cut has been overshadowed by the expiration of a much bigger package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush. The Bush-era tax cuts also expire at the end of the year, and Congress is expected to try to address them after the election, in a lame-duck session.

The payroll tax cut could become part of the mix in negotiations that could go in many directions. But lawmakers in both political parties say they doubt it.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Before he was named as Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., disparaged the payroll tax cut, calling it "sugar-high economics" that wouldn't promote long-term growth.

Social Security is funded by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100, rising to $113,700 in 2013. Half is paid by employers and the other half is paid by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

A worker making $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week. A worker making $100,000 saved $2,000 a year.

The beauty of the tax cut is that is shows up in weekly paychecks, giving workers more money to spend or save. The downside is that some workers may not notice a $19-a-week increase in pay, making them unlikely to credit the politicians who made it happen.

Under the law, Congress is reimbursing Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

Democrats are more willing to defend the tax cut, saying it helped prop up the economy during a rough stretch while providing what amounted to a 2 percent pay increase to millions of middle-income workers. But they, too, are concerned about maintaining Social Security's source of revenue.

"I think people realize that was a temporary thing," said Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, a senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said he thinks there is evidence that the tax cut helped the economy. But, he added, "I'm not sure that it met expectations."

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she, too, wants to let the tax cut expire.

Larry Summers, Obama's former economic adviser, is a lonely voice in Washington calling to extend the payroll tax cut. He said in a recent speech that the economy is too fragile to reduce workers' incomes.

Obama pushed for the tax cut in late 2010 as a way to increase workers' take-home pay to help boost consumer spending and provide a spark for the economy. Economists were divided on the economic benefits. Many said it probably helped increase consumer spending but there was no consensus on the magnitude.

The initial tax cut was for only a year, and many Republicans in Congress wanted to let it lapse at the end of 2011. But Obama and Democratic lawmakers successfully fought to extend it through 2012.

Obama, however, didn't include the tax cut in his 2013 budget proposal, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress this year that he saw no reason to extend it again.

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage wouldn't rule out an extension but wouldn't commit to one, either.

"The president fought extremely hard last year in the face of Republican opposition to ensure that the payroll tax cut was extended," Brundage said. "There are a number of tax issues that Congress will have to deal with at the end of the year, this being one of them, and we will continue to evaluate all of the options available to us at that time."

Romney's campaign hammers Obama almost every day for proposing to let Bush-era tax cuts expire for individuals making more than $200,000 and married couples making more than $250,000. But Romney's tax plan would let the payroll tax cut expire, an issue he doesn't mention on the stump.

Romney's campaign declined to discuss the issue.

British protesters demand end to "failing" austerity

LONDON (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of protesters marched through London on Saturday calling for an end to public spending cuts and tax rises launched by a government they accuse of elitism and ignorance about the plight of recession-hit voters.

Blowing horns and whistles, demonstrators streamed past the Houses of Parliament behind a banner declaring "Austerity is Failing", and called on Prime Minister David Cameron to do more to revive Britain's struggling economy.

The Conservative-led coalition is reeling from the resignation on Friday of a senior minister accused of calling police "plebs", a class-laden insult for working people, and the perception that they are out of touch.

"The wealthy don't realise the impact of the cuts and this government is only interested in what you can give them," said local government worker Eric Batty, 60, dressed in a black grim reaper cloak costume symbolising death.

The government says it must stick to its plan to eliminate a budget deficit that stood at 8 percent of gross domestic product last year, the biggest of any major European country. It says the euro zone crisis has also cast a shadow over the British economy.

Cameron's party faced a barrage of negative headlines over the departure of Andrew Mitchell - the "Chief Whip" or party enforcer - four weeks after he swore at police guarding the gates to the prime minister's Downing Street office.

A separate row involving finance minister George Osborne, who sat in a first class train carriage with a standard class ticket before paying for an upgrade, added ammunition to critics who say the Conservatives are privileged and aloof.

Addressing protesters, opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband was quick to seize on the latest Conservative missteps to condemn Cameron's policies.

"He is a weak and clueless prime minister," Miliband told a cheering crowd. "Andrew Mitchell may have resigned but the culture of two nations runs right across this government. They cut taxes for millionaires and they raise taxes for ordinary families."

However, Miliband was booed when he told demonstrators that Labour would have had to make cuts too if it had won the last election, albeit at a slower pace.

Under grey autumnal skies, demonstrators waved banners saying "No Cuts", "Tax the Rich, Teach the Poor" and "Plebs of the World Unite", poking fun at Mitchell's resignation.

Nurses, cleaners, librarians and ambulance drivers were among those who joined the march and a rally in London's central Hyde Park, in one of the biggest anti-austerity protests this year. Organisers estimated that 150,000 people took part.

Marches also took place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Glasgow, Scotland.

"I've got friends who are in desperate straits, living in fear of losing their job and their house," said Nick Chaffey, 48, a Socialist Party campaigner married to a teacher who has taken a pay cut.

Police said the London march had passed peacefully and they expected to report a low number of arrests in a bulletin later.

COALITION UNDER PRESSURE

Trade union leaders are trying to use the rally to pile more pressure on Cameron, telling protesters the government's economic plan has failed and only prolonged Britain's recession.

"Austerity isn't working. It is hammering the poorest and the most vulnerable," said Brendan Barber, head of the Trades Union Congress, an umbrella group which represents 54 unions.

The coalition government had responded to calls from unions and the opposition Labour Party to do more to increase growth by relaxing planning laws and boosting lending to businesses.

Cameron's party staked its 2010 election campaign on the austerity programme, calling for deeper cuts to welfare spending while dismissing the idea of a tax on the wealthy.

In an emergency budget announced after winning power, his coalition government said it would cut most departmental budgets by an average of around 20 percent over four years.

It announced a public sector pay freeze, set a new ceiling on the total state benefits any family can receive and cut tax relief on pensions. The VAT sales tax went up to 20 percent.

Conservative Party Chairman Grant Shapps said opposition Labour and the unions had "turned a blind eye" to the need to rein in spending.

He said: "By marching with them, Ed Miliband proved he still stands for more spending, more borrowing and more debt."
